Not to be an ass, but Sex Pistols can't really be said to be the source of punk, you could argue that Malcom McLaren made punk "popular" when he "made" the Pistols though. But the source wold be CBGB and bands like the New York Dolls, The Stooges, The Dictators and in a way MC5.
Contrary to popular belief, Punk rock started in the US and not the U.K, however you could say that the Punk SCENE we know NOW started in the U.K even though the term punk was used as a name for the scene that evolved around CBGB, and not necessarily the music itself.
BUT, the Sex Pistols did make a bloody great album, I'll give them that.
So yeah.. rant over, please forgive me.
